Berkeley (3 km W from epicenter)
I was in the Loma Prieta earthquake in 1989, and a mile from the epicenter. Although this earthquake was very brief, it felt extremely sharp and strong and terrifying because I was only a half mile from the epicenter (my house is up the hill behind the Claremont Hotel) and this was a shallow quake. If it had lasted longer, there would have been significant damage to homes and personal belongings in the immediate area, given the powerful jerking motion. It felt much stronger than a 4.5 to me in its intensity. It felt more like a 6 or higher, and I have experienced a lot of small earthquakes in addition to the major Loma Prieta one, since living in the SF Bay area for the past 43 years. Thank You.
