A single small jolt. We are on a hillside, a wood frame home of a single floor but built over the garage, where the rear of the house is at ground level and the front of the house is two-story. We never feel rolling or swaying motions, we always feel sharp jolts. I usually know when there is a tremor because of the way the house makes a single (usually) sudden creak accompanied by a small "jolt" feeling (as though someone slammed a door).
